24/06/2010 Frustrated
Have you ever had a friend who was just too lazy to do anything for himself or herself? I have a friend like that. She is good people but she has done nothing but complain for the last 8 months..and really..years!
We were laid off in August from a major insurance company. We were bought by a large insurance carrier here in California, told we would have jobs but then laid off two months later. No one in the company survived. They basically bought the book of business. It is the way of the world so I am not crying much. Like the smart gal that I am, that same day I called EDD and my paperwork was started. My check came timely and the waiting and searching began.
My friend did not do the EDD paperwork that day. She waited a day and then the drama started. How was she going to pay her house payment, her credit cards, purchase presents for her nieces! I listened, held her hand and gave her advice as to how to search for work. You see, she has only held one job all her adult life and it was the one from where we were laid off.
I helped her shop for the best laptop, showed her how to use it, what programs to use and set her up on job boards. I even wrote her resume for her. That was a challenge as her experience really was limited and I needed to pull as much as I could on her skills and experience. I made her look marketable. Now all she had to do was to search and make copies of the resume I emailed to her…and gave her hard copies as well.
NOW…she relies on me to find her leads…get her copies of her resume. This is now 9 months since layoff and she has barely started looking. She wants what she used to have but unfortunately with her experience…not going to happen. The funny part, she wants me to go to the same workplace so we can work together. THAT will not happen.
So-I am frustrated with a friend who cannot do for herself.
